15 Year Engagement Anniversary

This past week Roger and I had a major milestone. Fifteen years ago, on April 9th, 2004, Roger and I got engaged. Since we don't have a written account of the experience I decided that after 15 years it was about time. So here goes:

I got home from my mission on March 23rd, 1994. Roger was waiting there at the airport when I arrived. Since this story isn't about our courtship I will leave the details of why he was there for another time. Needless to say, from the time I stepped off the plane we were practically inseparable and things went rather quickly. It had been about 2 weeks since I got home and things were moving toward a hopeful future. We had seen each other practically everyday and I am pretty sure we both knew that we were in love. We went on a date to Salt Lake City and walked around temple square. After words we drove up in the Avenues and parked in a spot overlooking all of Salt Lake City and the temple. We talked about all sorts of things but mostly the future. The longer we talked the more discouraged I got. Roger kept saying things like he wasn't sure he had enough money to think about getting married and he wondered how would we be able to finish school and how he just didn't know how to make things work out. I felt frustrated because I felt like if we had some sort of commitment then we could work towards a future together with faith that all would be fall into place. Instead it appeared as if he was freaking out and looking to slow things down. I wasn't sure what to think the next few days although we kept seeing each other as if nothing had been said or changed. (He told me later that this was all a ploy to "throw" me off. He didn't want me to know an engagement was coming. I don't think men realize how much a woman analyzes everything and I seriously wondered what was wrong with him)

Well a couple of days later, on Saturday, April 9th, it was my turn to decide what we were going to do that night. Since I was living in Lehi and he was in Provo we took turns driving back and forth and planning our dates. Well he called me sometime during the day and asked if I would just come to his apartment and he would figure out something we could do. When I arrived we went across the street to a video store to pick out a movie. We wandered around for quite awhile looking at the various titles and trying decide what to watch. We finally picked the movie "Forever Young". It had been out for sometime but since we were both behind on our movies neither of us had seen it or knew much about it. So we figured it would be worth a shot.

After going to Food-for-Less to pick out some treats (licorice and popcorn) we returned to his apartment. His roommates were all there and he informed them we were going to watch a movie and they needed to go to their rooms. He then popped the biggest bowl of popcorn I had ever seen. At this time I did not know how much he loved popcorn (he takes after his mother) and he did not know that I only like it a little bit.

We sat down on his couch and the movie began. The movie was a typical romance. It starts out in 1939 with a man (Daniel), in love with a woman (Helen) and he decides to ask her to marry him. Before he has a chance to do it (he chickened out) she is hit by a car and goes into a coma. After several months he is given no hope that she will ever wake up and he decides to do something drastic. His friend is a scientist who has been working on a top secret cryogenic machine. So he decides to be the first human test subject and his friend does it in secret with the promise to wake him in 1 year from his frozen state. Well it shows him being frozen and the time passes away. Well needless to say things never work out the way they should and he is awoken by two boys in some warehouse 53 years in the future. The majority of the movie is about him trying to find his friend and of course has all kinds of adventures along the way.

At the beginning of the movie I ate a little of the popcorn but then stopped to move on to the licorice. Roger kept asking me if I wanted more and I kept graciously declining him. Well throughout the whole movie he kept plugging away at this endless bowl of popcorn. Eventually, his roommates kept passing through the room and grabbing huge handfuls of popcorn as they went by. Of course I was clueless and pretty engrossed in the movie. As we were getting near the end of the show, it was obvious that this man's love was still alive. She had woken up from her coma and never knew what had happened to him. So he is desperately trying to get to her before all these scientists get to him first. (His friend had died and left him in a pickle) Well Daniel finally got to her and of course it was so sweet and romantic. He said "So are you going to marry me or what?" I was leaning against Roger at this time. I could feel his heart beating rapidly through his chest and my shoulder. I asked him if he was o.k. and he said he was fine. He then asked if I wanted more popcorn. I said no, but he insisted and said "have more popcorn". At that moment I looked down into the almost empty bowl (it took the whole movie to get to the bottom) and saw a ring. I was surprised and thanks to his little "act" of panic a few nights before was totally not expecting it. Roger then said "I don't want to have to wait a lifetime to marry you, will you marry me?" Well of course I said yes.

It was kind of crazy that we had picked the movie we had. I don't think Roger enjoyed it very much as he had been anticipating me finding the ring. He never imagined we would make it through the whole movie and yet the timing was perfect. We immediately called his mom and woke her up to tell her the news. She was excited for us. We then drove to Lehi to tell my family. My little sister knew something was up immediately and yelled "Nooo". You see I had just gotten home 17 days earlier and my other brother and sister were still on their missions and she was ready for me to leave yet. My parents were excited as well yet not surprised.

Anyway, the rest is history. We obviously got married and are working on the "Happily Ever After " part. Agreeing to marry him was the best decision I ever made (well that and going on my mission which instigated our meeting each other in the first place). We have had a fun and crazy 15 year ride and I look forward to many many many more years to come.

Here is something else that was kind of funny about the whole situation. I got home from my mission on a Tuesday and gave my homecoming talk on Sunday. The following Sunday was General Conference. I got engaged the following Saturday. The next day, Sunday, was the first time I had seen my ward members since I gave my talk. Many people came up to me and asked how I was adjusting. Of course I told them "pretty well, I am getting married" Seeing their shocked looks made it all the more fun.

Brianna's Easter Party

Today at preschool Brianna had an Easter Celebration. They hunted for Easter eggs and made crafts. She is really getting into the whole holiday this year and was so excited to open each egg and see what was inside it.

Here she is as my little Easter bunny. She got lots of yummy candy and no less than two hours later she had eaten it all (except for the few pieces she had saved for her brother and sister). And here is mom, messing around with the camera and trying to capture the essence of my four year old before it goes away.

Ryan and A.L.L.

Today after two months of anticipation and agonizing, Ryan finally received the results for the A.L.L. (accelerated learning lab) testing. He was accepted into the program!! Here is his look of surprise as he read the letter and realized he made it. That was about all the emotion he showed (he definitely takes after his father in that way). But in spite of his calm demeanor I know he was excited.

As a mom I was quite thrilled. Alyssa has really enjoyed the A.L.L. classes and they truly provide many more unique and fun learning experiences. When Alyssa tested, it was never any question of whether or not she would get into the class. You could just tell by her personality that it was the right fit for her. Ryan on the other hand is so calm, quiet and unassuming that I truly didn't know where he was at as far as school and tests and so forth. Well this answered my question and I think it is a real boost for him as well.

The only thing left to do is figure out how I am going to handle the juggling of schools. Alyssa will be in the junior high, and Ryan will be in the existing elementary and yet Brianna will have to attend to new school. It will be quite the running around for me and I am not excited about that. But if this is what Ryan wants, I know it will be good for him and I will make the necessary adjustments. It should be a great year next year!

Alyssa's Shakespeare Play

Last night Alyssa had her official debut in her first Shakespeare play. Actually 2 plays. Her class put on Macbeth and Twelfth Night. Alyssa has been looking forward to performing Shakespeare ever since she first saw the 6th graders perform when she was in the third grade.
They had auditions a couple of months ago and even thought Alyssa didn't get the parts she was aiming for she jumped right in with the gusto of a true born actress. The class did the set, props, sound effects and even costumes. Alyssa never once asked for help with lines and it wasn't until I saw the extent of all she had to memorize that I was truly impressed.

The caliber of the performance was outstanding for a group of sixth graders. I know that I couldn't do half the job that they did.

In Macbeth, Alyssa had a few minor roles. At one point she witnessed the murder of her child and her facial expressions and "fake" crying were truly believable. She did quite well as an extra even though it wasn't her favorite.

She had a larger role in Twelfth Night. This play was a little less dark and more entertaining to watch. She played the part of Maria, a lady in waiting to a countess. She had several lines and delivered them all with confidence and a dramatic flair like no other. Of course we always knew that she had the natural tendency towards "drama". Well it paid off. She didn't miss a line. Her character was a little bit of a schemer and at times it seemed as if she wasn't acting at all. She did a fabulous job and I was quite proud.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience for her and she hopes to someday be in other plays or musicals on a junior high or high school level. I look forward to many performances in the future.

Top Ten Moments of the Week . . . so far

10. Body for Life. I guess, Roger and I are a glutton for punishment so we decided to do another serious 12 week session of this wonderful diet. Two more days until free day!!

9. The death of tadpole number two. Fortunately we just got him and did not have time to bond yet. I just don't think it ever acclimatized after it's cross country trip in the mail. Maybe the third time is the charm . .

8. Wind, snow, more wind, cold temperatures, wind, clouds, wind, the sun peaking out, wind and rain.

7. Spending an hour cleaning up sagebrush in our yard from our past several storms only to have them blow in the next day with . . . . you guessed it . . . the wind.

6. Baseball tryouts. Ryan had to wait in a line at the ball field for 2 1/2 hours for his chance to hit five pitches and throw two balls to first base in front of at least 20 different coaches. Since this is our first experience in this upper league we really didn't care which team he was put on, but apparently the coaches care and it's big business.

5. Alyssa had her first official camp meeting for Young Women's this week. She is just not old enough to be going to girls camp and I am not old enough to have to be planning my summer around it.

4. Five of six days have been declared pajama days by Brianna. She went to Walgreens, Grandma's house, been outside and even played at Brianna Wheelers house in her pajamas. You can tell that she is my youngest because I have come to believe that pj's and winter boots are quite fashionable.

3. Addison's baby blessing. It was nice to get together as a family to celebrate such a wonderful event. Later in the day we gathered at Grandma's house and had a big family dinner. It is always nice to get the cousins together and to be able to visit as adults.

2. Conference. Our family had a great time lounging in our pj's and listening to the many uplifting talks. It is always wonderful to be spiritually fed and encouraged in spite of the hardship of the times.

1. Sunburn!!! Yes, one day this week we actually had sunshine and 70 degree weather. I actually got a small sunburn on my neck. We all soaked up the sunshine every minute we could before it went away. I went to the nursery just to get excited about plants and green. I got my garden prepared and even planted the peas. The kids played nonstop and went to beds with smiles on their faces. It gives me hope that spring may come . . eventually.

Ryan's Room

Every winter I get the urge to work on some big project. I think it is my way of surviving January. So this year I finally got around to doing Ryan's bedroom. He helped me pick out a bedspread and we used it as the inspiration for the color schemes. We also worked around a cool picture that Grammy gave Ryan for Christmas one year. Then Megan helped me figure out how to tie it all together and make it "cool" looking. We were all pleased with the results and Ryan love's it. It is very fitting for a boy that loves creatures of all kinds, legos, art, cool science stuff, and treasures of all sorts.

One of our favorite features is the magnetic wall. The surface of the red area is magnetic so Ryan can hang up his pictures, art work or anything else he deems worthy to display.

April Fools

After school yesterday, Alyssa and Ryan starting whispering together behind closed doors. I knew mischief was underfoot since rarely do they like to be in the same room with each other let cooperating on something. Sure enough, the pranks of April Fools Day had begun.

Fortunately for me they are not naturally coniving and sneaky kids. Most everything was quite harmless and even silly. My favorite was taping the end of the t.p. roll with scotch tape so you couldn't find the end. Another great one was the blue milk. Tables were actually turned on them though, when I used that same milk for the their french toast this morning. I am not sure they were fans of the green bread, but was goes around comes around.

I found this handy little list they made together of all the pranks they had planned. I thought it was cute and thus needed to include it here.
